Our next Heim concert is on Sunday, March 12, at 5PM with a reception following the concert. The concert will feature our 2016 Music Scholarship recipients, Kristina á Váli (cellist), Soraya Karkari (soprano), Ryan Capozzo (tenor), and our 2015 scholarship recipient Gustavo Briceño (violinist).
The Briarcliff Music Scholarship is established in 2014 to give financial assistance to young talented musicians in their music studies and professional pursuit. These talented musicians were awarded the scholarship after an audition and interview by a panel of judges and committee members.
Kristina Váli, cellist, is a native of the Faroe Islands. She has appeared in major concert venues in Northern Europe and America, such as Tivoli Concert Hall and Carnegie Hall. She received her Bachelor of Music degree (summa cum laude) from the Montclair State University. She is currently pursuing her Master’s degree at SUNY Purchase.
Soraya Karkari, soprano, is a graduate student at SUNY Purchase. She has sung major roles in their opera productions, such as Hänsel in Hänsel und Gretel in German, Cobweb in Britten’s “Midsummer Night Dream,” and Mary Warren in Ward’s “The Crucible.” This spring she will be singing the role of Poppea in Purchase Opera’s production of L’incoronazione di Poppea.
Ryan Capozzo, tenor, is also a graduate student at SUNY Purchase. He has performed the roles of Lysander in Britten’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” Don Basilio and Don Curzio in Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro,and Reverend Parris in Robert Ward’s “The Crucible.” Ryan will be performing the role of Nerone in Purchase College’s production of L’incoronazione di Poppea in this coming March.
Gustavo Briceño is from Venezuela. He has played with the Simon Bolivar Symphony Orchestra, the Miami Symphony Orchestra and the Teresa Carreño Youth Orchestra of Venezuela, with which he played in prestigious festivals, including the Lucerne Festival, the Beethoven Fest (Bonn), and the Salzburg Festival. He has had the honor to be conducted by Claudio Abbado, Sir Simon Rattle, Gustavo Dudamel and Frühbeck de Burgos. He is a currently a member of Syracuse Sinfonia, a professional orchestra in Syracuse, NY.
